Ruth, of Vestry Road, Oakwood, suffers from Behcets syndrome, which affects the immune system.The condition causes it to turn on the body, which leads to frequent inflammation of blood vessels.
In Ruth's case, this means she develops regular, painful ulcers, especially inside her mouth.
She said: "I have had as many as 20 in my mouth at once. It means I can't talk, I can't eat and I can't drink or swallow. I have to be taken to hospital and given fluid through a drip."
